Everyone agrees the family should ring in the new year together, and nobody agrees on where. A hotel ballroom is loud, a city is pricey, and no single house fits three or four households. New Year's in Broken Bow is the easy answer: a big cabin in the Oklahoma pines, a hot tub, a fire and your own kitchen, with enough nearby to fill the days on either side of midnight. Here is how to plan it so it runs smoothly.
Why New Year's in Broken Bow works for several families
The week between Christmas and New Year's is when many families have time off at once, and the large cabins around Hochatown are built for that. Each household gets its own bedroom, the kids get a game room, and the adults get a hot tub and a porch. The woods are bare in winter, so you can see the hills, and the days are cool and quiet.
The honest trade-off is that Dec 31st is not a big-event night in the way a city is. We could not find an official New Year's Eve event for 2026 from the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce, so we are not printing one. Plan to make midnight yourselves at the cabin, and check the Chamber's events schedule closer to the date in case something is added.
Make midnight a cabin night
Most families who do this lean into the cabin rather than looking for a party. Some ideas that work across ages:
- Early countdown for the little ones. Pick a "midnight" at 8 or 9 PM with sparkling juice and a countdown on the TV, then let the adults have the real one later.
- A cook-off. Give each family one course for a New Year's dinner and a shared dessert table.
- Game room finals. Run a pool or foosball tournament through the evening, with a trophy.
- Hot tub and fire pit. Cold nights are the best time for both. Bring warm robes and slippers.
- Resolution jar. Everyone writes a goal or a favorite memory from the year and reads them out.
Check your cabin's rules about fireworks and noise before you bring anything. Most vacation homes in the woods do not allow fireworks.
My whole family had tons of fun and enough rooms to where I could run away from 3 sets of my in-laws and the kids (lol).

What is open around Broken Bow in winter
Outdoor attractions in Hochatown can slow down or close for the cold months, so check each business before you drive over. A few things are reliably there:
- Beavers Bend State Park. The park lists hiking, biking, fishing and river float trips among its activities, and its trails, including the long David Boren hiking trail, are walkable on a mild winter day. Park office hours change by season, so confirm them first. Our Beavers Bend guide covers the park in detail.
- Forest Heritage Center. The museum inside the park hosts a program on the first Saturday of the month, which is a gentle indoor outing for mixed ages.
- Downtown Broken Bow. The Chamber lists live music at the downtown amphitheatre on the last Friday of each month and a weekly Wednesday night at a downtown wine bar. Treat these as recurring patterns and confirm before you go.
- Gem mining, escape rooms and the petting zoo. These indoor and mild-weather options in Hochatown are good for school-age kids. See our list of things to do in Hochatown.
Winter trout fishing
The Lower Mountain Fork River below the dam is one of the few places in Oklahoma where winter fishing is the point. The state park says its trout streams are stocked year-round, and it has two catch-and-release trophy areas. Anglers in the family can fish while everyone else sleeps in. Dress in layers, check river conditions and release schedules before you wade, and read our guide to the lake and Mountain Fork River.
Tips from regular visitors
People who spend holidays in the Hochatown area tend to say the same few things:
- Stock the kitchen on the way in. Food options in Hochatown are limited and crowded on busy weeks, so buy groceries before you reach the cabin.
- Expect restaurants to be full. Holiday weeks are among the busiest of the year, so go early or book ahead, and keep a cabin dinner as the backup plan.
- Keep an indoor backup. Winter here is changeable and often damp. Mild, dry days happen too, so keep a trail walk ready for the best weather.
- Check the road status before you go. Winter weather can change a drive quickly, especially on the way in after dark.
A sample New Year's weekend
Day 1, arrive. Check in, claim bedrooms, unload groceries and keep dinner simple. Light the fire.
Day 2, Hochatown. Gem mining or the petting zoo in the morning, lunch out, then escape rooms or a brewery stop for the adults. Early dinner at the cabin.
Day 3, New Year's Eve. Walk the trails at Beavers Bend in the morning if the weather is good. Spend the afternoon setting up for the evening: the cook-off, the game room, the early countdown. Midnight at the cabin.
Day 4, New Year's Day. Slow start. Big brunch, leftovers, a movie and the hot tub. A short drive to see the lake if anyone wants fresh air.
Day 5, head home. Pack up at an easy pace and travel in daylight.
