Destin's beaches are known for sugar-white sand and clear, emerald water. If you're staying in The Villages of Crystal Beach, you're already within walking distance of one of the nicest stretches. Here's how to pick a beach for the day, and how to keep everyone safe on the water.
Crystal Beach: your home beach
From Seas The Dream, Crystal Beach is about a 7-minute walk, or you can ride the free trolley. That's a big deal with a group, because nobody has to fight for parking or load a car with chairs. Grab everything from the beach closet at the house: chairs, umbrellas, coolers and toys.
Tips:
- Set up early to claim a good spot for a big group.
- Bring a wagon if you have one. The walk is short, but gear adds up.
- Leave someone at the house with the little ones at nap time. The pool is right there when they wake up.
Henderson Beach State Park
About 5 minutes away, Henderson Beach State Park is a protected stretch of coastline with tall dunes, boardwalks, picnic areas and a quieter feel than the public beaches near the busiest parts of town. There's an entrance fee per vehicle, and parking can fill up in summer, so go early.
It's a great choice for:
- Families with young kids who want more space
- Grandparents who want picnic tables, restrooms and boardwalk access
- Sunset walks along the dunes
The beach flag system
Destin's beaches use colored flags to show water conditions. Check them every day, because conditions change fast:
- Green: low hazard, calm conditions
- Yellow: medium hazard, moderate surf or currents
- Red: high hazard, strong surf or currents
- Double red: the water is closed to the public
- Purple: dangerous marine life, like jellyfish
Rip currents are the biggest risk on Gulf beaches. If you're caught in one, swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then swim back in. On red flag days, the resort pool is the best place to swim.
What to bring for a big group
- Shade: umbrellas or a pop-up canopy, if allowed where you set up
- More water than you think, plus snacks in a cooler
- Reef-safe sunscreen and rash guards for kids
- Sand toys and a few floats
- A trash bag. Local rules ask beachgoers to take everything with them at the end of the day and fill in any holes dug in the sand.
Beyond Destin: 30A
For a day trip, the beach towns along Scenic Highway 30A, east of Destin, have a different, quieter feel, with colorful towns, bike paths and coastal dune lakes. Grayton Beach State Park is a favorite.
The location is within walking distance to Bass Pro and restaurants. The pool is really nice with shade along the sides.
